WE NEED HELP FOR MEMORIAL DAY PARADE & PICNIC! TIME CHANGE! SUMMER UNIFORM!

 MEMORIAL DAY PARADE (Marching Band) - MONDAY 5/30

We hope you can join us for the final band performance of the school year as our marching band performs in the Memorial Day parade in Howell.  

• Report time for students is 8:45 A.M. - TIME CHANGE from original blog post!!! and the parade starts at 10 a.m. at the library.  The parade ends with a ceremony at Thompson Lake Cemetery.  Students will be bussed to the parade and back to the high school - allow some time for your student to turn in their marching band uniform after the parade.
• Temperatures are going to be in the upper 80's on Monday.  With the student's safety in mind, we will NOT be wearing our formal marching band uniforms.  Students need to wear their marching band tshirt, khaki shorts, black shoes and black socks.
• IF you signed up to help with uniforms, thank you but, we will not need help with that.

We will need help with loading the trailer, bus chaperones and walkers, and setting up and running the picnic. Trailer loader should be available to ride with Mr. Miller and the trailer to help unload equipment. Bus chaperones need to be available to walk in the parade with the band and bring backpacks with cold water bottles, sunscreen, and sugar snacks for any low blood sugar issues. Any student with special medical needs may need a parent to carry their meds. At least one parent to have a first aid kit. Our band will perform at the Cemetery Ceremony and then will proceed back to the band room to change before heading to the picnic.

We will need a few parents to head over to the Rotary Pavilion at Schofield Park during the parade to start setting up the picnic. This would typically be a Sophomore or Junior parent so that the Senior parents can enjoy their last parade. Donations should be dropped off at the the pavilion before the start of the picnic.

Retirement Open House for Mr. Smigell - Wednesday 5/25 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

• The time has come for us to show Smigell all of our Howell High Forever love and usher him out in style.  We will be enjoying appetizers and desserts while we see Smigell off!

Initial Band Placements for 2022-2023

Hello Everyone,

1.  The students listed are all students that indicated that they are returning next year.  Students who indicated they were not coming back are not on the list.  IF AN ERROR WAS MADE EITHER WAY, please let me know.  I have everyone's score and we can easily rectify that.

2. Please do not email me, text, or call me about the results until Monday.  At that time I will happily answer all questions you may have.  For those who did not place where they wanted, PLEASE TALK TO ME FIRST before freaking out.  There are options available and we can also check to see if there was an error in scoring or in the posting.  

3. Bad behavior (in the form of either gloating, complaining, or saltiness) WILL NOT BE TOLERATED, be it on social media or in person.  Please report it to me if there is an issue.

4. THESE PLACEMENTS ARE NOT "SET IN STONE" BUT ARE ABOUT 85% CERTAIN.  A few adjustments are always made.  

5. Percussion ensemble still has a openings, as does School of Rock.  Please see Mr. Smigell for details

Ladies and Gentlemen, 

It is my pleasure to announce the hiring of the next Howell High School Director of Bands!  After a long process and over 40 applicants (Including conducting auditions with our very own Highlander Band), the committee has made their decision.  Let me be the first to enthusiastically welcome Lisa Lachowski into the Howell family as our new director!!!!

Lisa hails most recently from Florida where she taught high school band and marching band.  She also was the drum major of the Spartan Marching Band during her time at Michigan State University.  I am already in contact with Ms. Lachowski and am doing everything in my power to assist in a smooth transition.  I just know she is going to carry our beloved Highlanders to new place and new wonderful accomplishments.  

Be glad, your future is very bright, my Highlanders!

BAND AWARDS / END OF YEAR CELEBRATION! (a.k.a. Band Banquet)

Wednesday, May 18th at 7 p.m. in the Rod Bushey Auditorium

• This is an optional event where we present awards to students that have earned their Varsity letter and other band awards (point sheets were due Friday the 13th).  We hope you can join us!
• We will also be awarding the John Philip Sousa award to one of our Seniors!  The prestigious John Philip Sousa award goes to an outstanding HHS band Senior every year.  Students nominate candidates and then vote for ONE senior band member that they think demonstrates band awesomeness!  Sousa award winners are someone they see as:  a leader, role model, helpful, great musician and positive representative of the band program. Voting closed to students on Friday the 13th.
