PRACTICE SCHEDULE CHANGE - TUESDAY, SEPT. 7TH!

Marching Band Practice - TIME CHANGE!
Tuesday, September 7th
6:30 to 8:30 pm at the football field

The 8th graders from Highlander Way and Parker Middle School will be joining us for the football game on Friday, September 10th.  They will also be joining us for practice on Tuesday, September 7th so we can help prepare them for their marching band debut.  In order to do this, we must change our practice time on the 7th.

Our sincere apologies for the late notice of this time change.  We definitely understand if you have a scheduling conflict but hope you can still make it.  We still need "all hands on deck", if possible, to make sure we're ready to go on the 10th!  Let Mr. Smigell (smigellj@howellschools.com) or I know if you have any questions.

Have a great week! - Laura  (allegoel@howellschools.com)

QUARANTINE RETURN

We've had some questions about when you can return to marching band practices and games if you are quarantined by the school.  If you are in quarantine that does not allow you to attend school, you also may not attend marching band practices or the football games during that time. You may return to marching band on the same day that you can return to school.  If you have more detailed questions about quarantines, please contact Howell High School at 517-540-8300.

Feel free to email me at allegoel@howellschools.com with any other questions!  - Laura :)

IMPORTANT MARCHING BAND UPDATES!

 Hello Everyone,

I know there has been some confusion regarding everything that has happened since band camp.  Here is what we know and how Howell HS Bands are responding:
  • We have had five positive test results for Covid-19 amongst the membership of the marching band since we returned from band camp.  All protocols dictated to me by the school district and State of Michigan were followed to the letter.  All children were asymptomatic when we left and when we came back (One of the children that tested positive remarked on being "tired" the last day at camp but was attributed to heat exhaustion).
  • The School has taken over contact tracing and calling everyone affected by quarantines.  Howell Bands does not make these decisions, we only give the school the information needed to complete the process.  If your child was deemed a close contact, you will be contacted by the school within the next day.
  • In an abundance of caution, we are cancelling marching band practices after school for this week (August 18th and 19th).  WE WILL BEGIN PRACTICES AS NORMALLY SCHEDULED NEXT WEEK.  NO OTHER CANCELLATIONS ARE PLANNED AT THIS TIME.  See below for our regular practice schedule:
MARCHING BAND PRACTICE SCHEDULE
  • August 18th and 19th practices CANCELLED!  No practice or football game on Friday, August 20th.
  • Bring a water bottle, your instrument and marching band music to all practices!
Starting the week of August 23rd (on days that we have school):
  • Mondays (no practice on Labor Day!) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday through Thursday from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
  • Friday practices TBA depending on the week (home games/away games)
!! Practices are mandatory !!  Please let Mr. Smigell or Mrs. Allegoet know if you can't make it.
Things seem to be "getting interesting" again.  I want you all to know I am doing my very best to balance performance opportunities while still being as responsible as I can from a safety perspective.  I will say this year that participating in band (just like coming to school) will involve a certain element of risk.

I am still looking forward to this year.  Whatever it will be, it will be better than last year with our amazing kids and intrepid staff.

- Jason Smigell

HIGH SCHOOL CLOSED 8/13

Due to continued power outages at both high school buildings AND significant water damage at the 10/12 building, the marching band's "mini-orientation" is cancelled for today.  PLEASE NOTE:  As indicated in the band blog's July 29th post, student's are only able to tour the buildings and get parking passes.  We NEVER indicated that pictures would be taken.  Pictures will be taken on picture make-up day on August 25th.

The school is hoping to have buildings re-opened on Monday but, this may not be possible.  Please check your school email, school website OR the band blog for continued updates.

I know that many families are without power and I hope it is restored soon.  Please let us know if you have any questions at ALLEGOEL@HOWELLSCHOOLS.COM or contact Mr. Smigell at SMIGELLJ@HOWELLSCHOOLS.COM

Take care - Laura

Please read this! (Mostly ) final COVID-19 protocols for camp!

Hello bandos, parents, and all the ships at sea!

Hopefully you have had a wonderful summer so far, I am delighted to report that we are still going to Eagle Village for marching band camp and most of the mask requirements are lifted.  Masks are required on the bus!  Unfortunately, we are all still living interesting lives, but the important thing to remember is IT IS GOING TO BE BETTER THAN LAST YEAR.  I think for most people, it will be A LOT better.

We are going to be following our district policies for health and safety protocols.  I think it would be a good idea for you to at least skim the two documents below:  If you would like the "TL,DR" (Too long, didn't read), scroll to the bottom.

I want you to know that this is the best I've felt about things in nearly a year and a half.  WE ARE GOING BACK TO THE LAND OF JOY AND MAGIC FOLKS... Little place called band camp.  My wife is currently doing a camp at Eagle Village and she says the food is still top notch!

COVID-19 PROTOCOLS

Click here for HHS Marching Band Camp Covid-19 Protocols

Click here for Howell Schools Covid-19 & Communicable Disease Protocols

MEDICATIONS AT CAMP

  • Personal student medications should be given to the Camp Nurse at check-in for dispensing throughout our stay at camp.  Please include (in a Ziploc bag with student’s name):  original packaging with student’s name, dose and frequency included.  Standard aids are available from our nurse’s band camp supply: Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl, Tums, ointment, bandaids, etc.
ROOM / CABIN ASSIGNMENTS
  • Students will sign up for their room / cabin during check-in at the high school this year.  Chaperones will be available to assist with this.
HELP NEEDED
  • Volunteers are needed to help at check-in the morning of band camp departure on Sunday.  Volunteers need to arrive at the band room at 6:45 a.m. for instructions and to help set up the check-in area.
  • Please email Laura Allegoet at ALLEGOEL@HOWELLSCHOOLS.COM if you can help or if you have any questions.  Thank you!
DETAILED BAND CAMP & MARCHING BAND INFO (info from previous Blog Post)
TLDR (Shame on you) 😉

-The only mask requirement is while on the bus.

-We would appreciate if you are going to camp, to either test for Covid within 72 hours of departure or to be fully vaccinated. This is not required.  No one is trying to force you.

- There is an element of risk by doing a sleep-away camp during a pandemic.  The vaccine currently is highly effective against even the delta variant.

-We are doing everything we can within the safety protocols of Howell Public Schools to protect your child.

-DON'T COME TO CAMP SICK AND DON'T HIDE SYMPTOMS IF YOU START TO FEEL BAD AT CAMP.

See you VERY, VERY soon!

-Smigell

PACKING LIST
MEDICATIONS

SCHEDULE FOR CAMP
If you're wondering what a typical day looks like at camp, click below:
The dance night is casual dress but some students also like to get dressed up.  If you'd like to wear a special outfit for the dance, please bring that with you :)

Clothing at band camp & practices:
We know it's hot and we'll be outside - but it's important for students, chaperones and staff to follow the school district's dress code:   Click here for student handbook - dress code on page 37

MARCHING BAND UNIFORM
Make sure to purchase khaki shorts before they are gone from stores.  These are a uniform requirement for those hot days.  They must be past your fingertips in length, per school dress code policy.  A marching band t-shirt will be provided for all students and handed out after we return to school.

These items are not required for band camp but are required for the first home football game on August 26th.

Here's what you'll need to get:

  • Black shoes - must be all black; anything not black will be covered with black Sharpie or black tape.  These should be comfortable shoes that won’t hurt your feet when marching; athletic-type shoes or work shoes are good choices.
  • Black socks.  For “summer uniform” socks can be any style as long as they are black.  For “fall uniform” (green and gold uniform issued by the school), socks must cover the ankle and any part of the lower leg that may be visible with long pants.
  • Khaki shorts for “summer uniform”.  Must be the appropriate length to meet the Howell Schools dress code (finger-tip length when arms are at your side).  If shorts are deemed not appropriate (by Mr. Smigell or his associates) you may not be able to participate with the marching band for that performance.
  • CLICK HERE FOR UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL BANDS (INCLUDING NON-MARCHING BAND CLASSES)
UNIFORM FITTINGS:
Students will be fitted for their regular, formal, marching band uniform - more info coming after band camp!  Students will wear their official marching band t-shirt and khaki shorts for the first home game AND if temperatures are too hot for our regular uniforms at other games.  Cost of this shirt was included in your marching band / camp fee.  T-shirts will be distributed before the first game.

MARCHING BAND PRACTICE SCHEDULE
  • Practices for August 18th and 19th are from 11 a.m to noon.  This is our first week of school and we have a half-day schedule on those days.  August 18th and 19th practices CANCELLED!

INSTRUMENTS
  • If you need a school-owned instrument, those will be distributed and assigned at squad leader day, newbie day and the morning of departure.
FOOTBALL SCHEDULE
Below is our marching band/football schedule for the 2021 season.  The home games are mandatory for Marching Band students. If Mr. Smigell decides to do pep band at an away game, those are optional.  For pep band, the student has to take their instrument home, have their own transportation to and from the game, then be able to get their instrument back to school by Monday.  Pep band schedule will be announced after school starts.
TAILGATES
Traditionally, the Band Boosters and Marching Band parents have sponsored a tailgate for the students so they can eat dinner before the football game.  This event takes place immediately following the pre-game practice on home-game Fridays.  Food is usually served around 5 pm and the cost is a donation of $3 or you can volunteer to send in food or other needed items.  Check the band blog or Facebook page for more information the week before a home football game.

ORIENTATION
Orientation is the week of band camp.  Parents/Guardians can attend their students regularly scheduled orientation day to pick up parking passes, purchase school swag, etc. if they choose (not required).
  • You can tour the buildings and find classrooms and lockers on Friday, August 13th from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m .
  • Pictures can be taken during make-up picture day on August 25th.
  • The school will mail / email you a packet of information in late July/early August with details about orientation and the beginning of the school year.
Please email Laura Allegoet at ALLEGOEL@HOWELLSCHOOLS.COM or Mr. Smigell at SMIGELLJ@HOWELLSCHOOLS.COM with any questions.

We look forward to seeing all of you soon!  It's going to be a wonderful HHS marching band season and school year!

- Laura Allegoet :)

BAND CAMP IS ON AND IT'S GONNA BE UP NORTH!! Plus, Music Announcement!

Hey all!

That's right!

Band camp is real, it's happening, and it's going to be at Eagle Village!  I just signed the contract, and we are in business!  The district is coming out with their guidelines for the upcoming school year next week, so we will have details on how this jives with the camp guidelines.  I will let you know as soon as we get this sorted out with the next bundle of information coming next week.

Meanwhile,  We have selected the three songs for our first show!  I believe two of them were also on the list of student suggestions, so great job everyone!

Here are some youtube links to our songs!

Opener: Phoenix by Fallout Boy\

Production: Blinding Lights by The Weekend

Closer: Mr Blue Sky by ELO

OK people that's all the news I've got for you for now.  I will say I AM EXTREMELY EXCITED and very optimistic about this upcoming marching season and school year in general.  We have a lot of work to do and it looks like we will be able to do it.  The last 16 months have been hard on us all.  For the first time in over a year I am feeling really good about things.  I am looking forward to giving you my very best, and us being able to "do band" the way it was intended.  I CAN'T WAIT!

Squad Leader list!

Hello All!

So, I have the 2021-2022 squad leader list!!! A few notes:

PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE A SQUAD LEADER CANDIDATE!

1. If you are on the list, congratulations!  ALL SQUAD LEADERS MUST ATTEND THE AUGUST 5TH CLINIC AND AUGUST 6TH NEWBIE DAY.

2.  If you are not on the list, you either:

    A. Did not pass the squad leader test,

B.Had an unacceptable fall conflict (Usually is a sport or a club.  Kids can be in most other sports             and be in marching band but may not be squad leaders or drum majors).

    C. Were in a section that had too many candidates for the amount of kids actually in the section (I did     not want the ratio to get any smaller than 2 kids per leader).  I tried very hard not to cut seniors.

3.Some drumline SLs and Flag SLs were left off the list because those are still getting sorted out.  They will be contacted individually.

OK.. Here it is!

2021-22 SQUAD LEADER LIST (These are ordered strictly by instrument, so read nothing else into it)

2021-2022 Postings for band placements

 Hello Everyone!

Below are the placements for Howell Bands for the 2021-22 school year.  A few points:

1.  The students listed are all students that indicated that they are returning next year.  Students who indicated they were not coming back are not on the list.  IF AN ERROR WAS MADE EITHER WAY, please let me know.  I have everyone's score and we can easily rectify that.

2. Please do not email me, text, or call me about the results until Monday.  At that time I will happily answer all questions you may have.  For those who did not place where they wanted, PLEASE TALK TO ME FIRST before freaking out.  There are options available and we can also check to see if there was an error in scoring or in the posting.

3. Bad behavior (in the form of either gloating, complaining, or saltiness) WILL NOT BE TOLERATED, be it on social media or in person.  Please report it to me if there is an issue.

4. THESE PLACEMENTS ARE NOT "SET IN STONE" BUT ARE ABOUT 90% CERTAIN.  A few adjustments are always made.

5. Percussion ensemble still has a few openings, as does School of Rock.  Please see Mr. Smigell for details

And with that... Here they are!
