THE MINI POST ABOUT BAND CAMP

Hey everybody!!

So the post we are putting together is going to be HUGE, but we know some of you really have some burning questions, so here is the mini post about those questions.  PLEASE CHECK BACK TOMORROW SO YOU KNOW WHAT'S UP!  There are going to be a lot of hoops to jump through that we need EVERYONE to cooperate with.

THE BIG POINTS:

1. You will need a mask and a personal waterbottle every day of camp!  Because we can't provide rain coats this year, it would be a good idea to bring a rain coat if you have one.

2. Students will NOT be able to attend their regularly scheduled orientation time.  Because band camp is so short this year, we need all hands on deck every day of camp.  However, we have an alternate plan where they will be able to attend Wednesday from 3:30 to 4:30 - after practice.   Students will NOT be picking up paper copies of their schedules at school.  We have been told that schedules will be on-line in PowerSchool once the school notifies you that those are available.

3. There will be an online Google health form that you will need to fill out every day before camp that you will show us on your phone as we are checking your temp for check in each day.  Detailed information on check in procedure and Google health form procedure will be provided tomorrow.

SCHEDULE
SUNDAY, August 9th
7:30 AM - SQUAD LEADERS REPORT FOR SQUAD LEADER SEMINAR (all Squad leaders passed the test, you're in!!)
11:00 - lunch on your own
12:30 - ALL NEWBIES (anyone new to marching band) AND SQUAD LEADERS REPORT FOR NEWBIE DAY
3:30 PM - Done

MONDAY AUG 10th - THURSDAY, AUG 13th
Camp is from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm daily - schedule for check-in will be posted in the next blog post!

GET HYPE... It's happening!!

TIMES LIKE THIS ARE TIMES WHERE EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE ON THE BALL.  PLEASE CHECK THIS TOMORROW FOR FULL INSTRUCTIONS.

I. Cannot. Wait. To. See. Everyone.  I'm probably gonna cry (maybe, we'll see)

NEW YORK UPDATE

We are truly disappointed that the refunds for the New York trip did not arrive as originally estimated and would like nothing more than to get this wrapped up for you soon!  Sounds like the new estimate from them is the end of August for refunds.  The latest update from the trip company is below.  Thank you for your continued patience!  - Laura

Email from Donna Adam, President of Educational Tours:

Thank you for reaching out about your refund.  Thank you for your patience as we work through this process.  We wish this was behind us as well.  We are still waiting on one large refund from a vendor in the amount of $9,393.45.  We are staying in touch with them and hope to have this within the month but there is no guarantee.  As soon as we receive the refund, this trip will be placed in the que to process the refund.

I understand that these refunds are needed.  We just cannot refund until all money has been received.  Again, I want to thank you for your patience through this as I know it can be very frustrating.  We are working as quickly as we can once we receive the refunds.

Kindest Regards,

Donna

WE HAVE BAND CAMP!!!

Hello Everyone!

THERE IS GOING TO BE BAND CAMP THIS YEAR... I am so sorry it has taken this long to get to this point, but if you have been on this planet for the last four months, you understand :) I AM SO HAPPY that THE HIGHLANDERS ARE BACK.

IF YOU ARE IN MARCHING BAND NO MATTER WHAT,  GO TO THE BOTTOM AND FILL OUT THE GOOGLE FORM BY SUNDAY, JULY 26TH SO WE KNOW WHO IS STILL PARTICIPATING IN MARCHING BAND!

There will be even more info in the near future, so check the blog every day from here on out!!!  Here are the most important parts right now:

BAND CAMP IS SHORTER:

Squad leader day AND newbie day are being moved to the "first" day of camp SUNDAY AUGUST 9TH.  Squad leaders will meet from 7:30 am -11:00 am and the newbies (anyone new to marching band) and squad leaders will meet from 12:30-3:30pm.  Nothing is going on August 6th or 7th anymore as far as rehearsal goes.  The entire marching band will meet Monday, August 10th through Thursday, August 13th from 7:30 am - 3:30pm.

BAND CAMP WILL ALL BE HELD AT HOWELL HIGH SCHOOL, AND ALMOST COMPLETELY OUTSIDE.

I've put a lot of thought into this and the only way I feel safe at this time is by having that huge group of kids outside.  There will be sanitizing stations, cooling stations, porta-potties, even lunch will be served outside.  There is currently a plan to get three enormous tents for various uses at the HS and we will be utilizing them as well.

WE ARE GOING TO WORK HARD TO BE SAFE.  PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING AS IT WILL DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT YOUR KID IS IN MARCHING BAND:

-We wear our masks whenever it is needed. Over our nose and mouth.
-We will be almost completely outside.
-EVEN OUTSIDE IF YOU ARE WITHIN 6 FEET OF SOMEONE ELSE YOU PUT YOUR MASK UP
-IF WE ARE INSIDE A BUILDING WE HAVE OUR MASKS ON
-No sharing ANYTHING (water bottles, instruments, flags, sticks, music, equipment... ANYTHING.  (this is going to be a big challenge for the kids that shed all their personal belongings all over the place, that never was acceptable, it will no longer be tolerated).
-We will go over proper handling, sanitizing, and proper covid-style playing of all instrument types (we will be using the study from the University of Colorado completed on band instruments and COVID-19 as guidance).
-Time will be taken to allow kids to properly clean and sanitize their hands and equipment.
-Students' and Staff''s medical condition will be closely monitored per the district policy.  This will probably include daily temp screening by our nurse along with filling out an online form each day.  In the event of someone getting sick and/or testing positive for COVID-19, we will follow strictly the guidelines put forth by our county health dept and our district.  By having camp, there is risk, but I am going to do my VERY best to minimize that risk.  Trust me, I am as scared as the rest of you (probably more than many, actually). Which brings us up to the final thing:
-None of the precautions we are taking are up for discussion.  We wear masks, we will keep our distance.  We will treat this disease as a legitimate threat and diligently work to protect each other.  I understand that some people have a different outlook at home.  What you do at home is up to you.  When the kids are in my care, I have to have everyone's cooperation, from both the kids and anyone near us on the premises (Adult volunteers, camp staff, etc) or we will be unable to proceed with camp.  There are no alternatives, no exceptions, no excuses.
-I would love to have people come visit and say hi, but due to COVID-19 we can't really have visitors even come and watch.  I know that sounds heartless, but you have to understand that our activity was not going to be allowed at all.  We have to work to keep our total numbers down.  I will send my own mother away if she shows up and tries to watch practice (and will hear about it for the next three years, but it's that serious).

MARCHING BAND / CAMP IS GOING TO COST $150
-If anyone is interested in how that is going to break down, we can do it for you.  Please trust me, it is pretty reasonable considering all the stuff we gotta do this year.  It includes buying the music, getting the drill, paying instructional staff, band shirt, and box lunch for Monday-Thursday of camp.

SCHEDULE
SUNDAY, August 9th
7:30 AM - SQUAD LEADERS REPORT FOR SQUAD LEADER SEMINAR (all Squad leaders passed the test, you're in!!)

NEW YORK UPDATE:
Sadly, there is very little new on this front other than they still think they will be able to get us our refunds by the end of July.  I did speak with them last week, and they assure me they are working as fast as they can.  I know that this has been a long time, and that things need to be moved forward.  We have showed good faith and all of you have been patient above and beyond what should be expected.  I am working with the school district to get their help in the collection process now.

Much much more on the way!  GET ON THE HYPE TRAIN!!

Big Post Coming

Hello Everyone!

I wanted to tell you that a large post is coming tomorrow following the Governor's expected announcement.

Things we will cover:

-Will there be marching band?

-Is there band?

-How is it going to work and still be safe?

-How much is it going to cost?

- How about that New York MONEY?

-If there is marching band, What is the show?

I am so sorry that this is so up in the air, I want you to know that we have been doing our best to get a plan together even though the situation keeps changing.  It is looking like we just might be able to pull this off.  I'll have the real update tomorrow.

All my best,

-Smigell

Important information regarding band camp and marching band

Hello everyone,

We received an email a few days ago from Eagle Village.  They informed us that they would be suspending all overnight camp accommodations until at least August 31st, 2020.  Unfortunately that means that we will not be having away band camp this year.  I am heartbroken.  This is the first time in about 19 years that the Howell Marching Band will have to have a "Home Camp".  I waited a few days to make sure that it truly was the case and that there would not be some miracle announcement from the Governor to change EV's mind.  I guess I am relieved that I did not have to make the decision, because I was having a hard time trying to figure out how we could pull it off and still keep everyone safe.

Obviously this is disappointing.  However, one thing that the age of COVID-19 has taught me is that one must keep moving forward even when one get's kicked in the guts. First, a little bit of good news, then what we currently (that word has become much more important hasn't it?) planning for the fall.

THE BAD NEWS:
-You already heard.  No away band camp.  :((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((

THE GOOD NEWS:
-Our state is among the best right now for containing the virus.  This gives us the best chance to have band in some form in the fall.

-I received a letter from the district about a week ago that I am employed for the 20-21 school year!  They're bringing me back and paying me, so there is a near 100% certainty that there will be SOME KIND of band for all of our talented young folk to play in.  THERE WILL BE MUSIC AGAIN IN THE FALL.

-Believe it or not, things are actually fairly optimistic for marching band in the fall.  This situation literally changes weekly, however.  Thus, our current plans by necessity are a shade vague.  Please continue to be patient.  We will inform you about what we are doing as soon as we become confident that the situation is fairly concrete.

-Howell Bands has the BEST kids in the UNIVERSE and we will figure out a way to return.

THE PLAN FOR MARCHING BAND (As of today 3:39pm EST 6/24/2020):

-WE ARE STILL HAVING HOME CAMP THE EXACT SAME DAYS AS "NORMAL" BAND CAMP.  If you were signed up for band camp, PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE YOUR PLANS!  One of the reasons we have away camp is so 99% of our band there for rehearsals.  Work shifts, surprise camping trips, tiddlywinks team practice, and cousin Sally's socially distanced birthday party are not excusable reasons.  Assume that you will be occupied 8am-8pm.

-If you paid for band camp by check WE ARE SHREDDING them (literally) and starting the process over.  If you paid by paypal online, we will be contacting you to see how you want your refund.  If you paid by money order, we will be issuing a refund by school check and it will be in the mail by July 1st.  Band camp is still going to cost money but will be SIGNIFICANTLY CHEAPER (less than half).  We still have to hire instructors, pay for music, equipment,  cleaning, tshirts, etc.  We will let you know how much it is a few weeks before camp, and everyone can re-submit payment.  I know that is crummy, but it is the best idea we can think of.

-We will still need chaperones at times for Home Camp, but obviously less and not for the whole day.  Parents that had signed up to chaperone away camp will be contacted soon to confirm involvement in home camp.  You are different from the kids, as you need to put food on the table.  If you have to work or take care of kids, just let us know so we can find replacements for you.

- KIDS READ THIS: Finally, if for some reason this change of plans has caused you to want to change your roster status (You want to rejoin marching band or quit) PLEASE LET US KNOW IMMEDIATELY since we are starting the show selection and drill writing process.

Ok,  That's all I got right now.  I'll let you know what's next as soon as the info is solid.  Stay safe, keep a stiff upper lip everybody, it's going to be ok!  We are going to make wonderful lemonade from all these lemons I promise you!

Hang in there,

-Smigell

Marching Band & NYC Updates!

Hello!  I sent emails to the Marching Band and NYC trip email addresses that I have but, wanted to make sure I didn't miss anyone.  IF you signed up for marching band but didn't get an email from me confirming your registration, please send me an email at allegoel@howellschools.com and let me know so I can make sure that I have your forms and payment.

A few things that are in the works also:  squad leader postings and sharing of the band banquet video / photo montage.  More info to come soon!

Marching Band
Because the situation with marching band and football is still very fluid,  we aren't depositing any payments until we receive confirmation from the school district that we are able to go away to Eagle Village for band camp.  We hope to have a plan in place by the end of the month.  This is from Mr. Smigell's May 27th blog post:

"We do not plan on cashing anyone's check until Band camp is a go.  If away band camp is cancelled, we shred all the checks and we will have a home camp.  At that time we will re-assess how much that will cost per student and have you send in/bring in the new amount."

If you paid via PayPal or money order, we will issue refunds, if needed.

We will have updates throughout the summer - please check your email, the band blog and "Howell HS Band" Facebook page regularly.

NYC Trip
We just received an update from the trip company and wanted to pass that info along to you.  First and foremost, thank you for your continued patience!  Please know that we are doing all we can to get your refund to you as soon as possible.

* The new estimate for refunds is late July. The trip company is unable to upfront money and issue refunds before they get money back from vendors. This is taking longer than expected. However, things are now moving along steadily since businesses have re-opened which is good news.

* Refund amount is still to be determined and dependent on how much can be recouped from vendors.  The trip company is working to get back the most money possible for you.

* Insurance holders - claims will be filed as soon as refunds are finalized. The trip company has your claim form and will submit them on your behalf.

Thank you again for your continued patience. I wish we had a better update.  Hoping to have that better update for you SOON!  Please email me (allegoel@howellschools.com) or Mr. Smigell (smigellj@howellschools.com) if you have any questions in the meantime.

Take care - Laura

PLEASE READ THIS POST ABOUT MARCHING BAND DEADLINE AND MEETING NOTES!

Hey folks, here is the video form of the meeting notes:

5/27/2020 meeting notes

It's five minutes, its worth your time, please watch it.

TLDW: YOU NEED TO POSTMARK YOUR MARCHING BAND FORM AND CHECK BY JUNE 1st.

-We currently do not have enough people turned in to go to band camp.  We need to have the forms so we know if you are in band camp or not.  We do not plan on cashing anyone's check until Band camp is a go.  If away band camp is cancelled, we shred all the checks and we will have a home camp.  At that time we will re-assess how much that will cost per student and have you send in/bring in the new amount.

1.If you are not turning in the form and check because you are waiting to see what happens... THAT TIME HAS PASSED.  Please turn it in and we will tear up the check if it's a no go.

2. If you are not turning your stuff in because you are worried about coronavirus.... Let me assure you that I am the most careful germaphobic person around.  I will not take kids up north unless I believe that we can keep them safe with an absolute minimum of risk.

3. If you are not turning in your stuff because you or your parents lost their job:  EMAIL US.  I don't want anyone missing out because of money.  We will work something out.

Also, the VIRTUAL BAND BANQUET IS TOMORROW!  5/28/20 at 6 pm.  Invite were sent out to ll the kids via google classroom.  If you like, you can pass that code along to grandma and grandpa and any other loved ones who want to see it.  It will be short and sweet but nice :)  PLEASE DO NOT PUBLICLY POST THE CODE TO SOCIAL MEDIA, as that is how we get those disgusting hackers.

Band placements for 20-21 school year

Hi folks,

OK so here are the band placements for next year.  please read the important points before freaking out:

1. If you are not on any of the lists, it is because You did not request band next year or told me you are not coming back... Or I messed up.  If you have been omitted in error email me and I'll fix it!

2. This is not exactly set in stone.  I left wind ensemble a little small so I could pick up a few more kids over the summer.  If you are interested in trying to re-audition or audition in the first place, contact me and we can talk.

3. It only matters what band you are in.  The chairs are not IN ANY ORDER WHATSOEVER.

4. Perc ensemble is still up in the air.  Percussionists, if you are in what you think is the wrong ensemble, let me know.

Ok, I think that's it.
