Band Booster Meeting, NYC Trip Meeting, Pep Band, First Concert, Senior Show

Hello All! Lots to post about for the month of October.

Here is the Full Band Program Event Calendar:

* Please mark your own calendar. Take note of the very important events (i.e. Home Football Games, Concerts, Parades, and Festival).

Monday Night Practices are 6pm - 8:30pm instead 6:30pm - 9pm (we only went that long if we were behind/learning new stuff).

Band Booster Meeting:
There is a Band Booster Meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, October 7th at 6:30pm in the band room. The superintendent will be there to introduce himself and to present info on the technology bond.

Pep Band:
When: This Friday, October 9th - be at the gates at 6:30pm (DON'T BE LATE!)
Where: Brighton HS 7878 Brighton Rd. Brighton, MI 48116
What (to bring and wear): Instrument, Flip-Folder of Music (upperclassmen bring any extra music you have from the past yrs to help with the new members), W/E your instrument may need (extra reeds, valve oil, etc), and you MUST wear this seasons mb shirt (We Will Rock You!)

Pep Band is not required - it goes towards your band letter / medals and it is fun. ^.^ You meet Mr.Smigell at the gates at 6:30pm to get in free (for students - parents must pay ~$5 at the admission gate to enter). Mr. Smigell will be at the game the whole time. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from Brighton (ask if you need a ride - Smigell will help you find a ride with another student (don't be afraid to ask)). Be sure to bring home your instrument Friday after school - there will be no way to get into the band room Friday evening (and remember to bring them back to school on Monday). Parents are welcome to cheer on the band / football team.

This is their Homecoming - traffic will be terrible on the way to Brighton HS - be sure to leave early to get to the HS on time. Grand River will be closed in downtown Brighton for their parade - it has been suggested to take Challis Rd. to Bauer Rd. to Brighton Rd. (if you took the highway) or Chilson Rd. to Brighton Rd. (if you are coming from downtown Howell) (or however way you want to get to Brighton Rd.) to get to Brighton HS.

NYC Trip Meeting:

Thursday October 15th at 7pm in the HHS Band Room is the info meeting for this school year's band trip (for newcomers - the program has an optional band trip every two years).

A summary of what was discussed will be available on the blog along with the digital version of the trip's packet shortly after the meeting. The packet will also be available in the sheet shack in the band room and at the First Band Concert .

First Band Concert:

Wednesday, October 21st at 7pm in the HHS / Rod Bushey Auditorium.  The theme is "Forces of Nature" and the concert will show all the concert ensembles, including the marching band.

Dress Code: "Dress nicely". This means NO TSHIRTS, SWEATSHIRTS/PANTS, JEANS, OR TENNIS SHOES. Obviously this also means that all clothing needs to be school appropriate as well. Gentlemen - a nice shirt and tie with slacks or khakis will do. Ladies - a nice blouse or sweater with a skirt or slacks put you in the clear. You will be changing into your uniform during the concert after you perform if you are in marching band, so bring your marching uniform (the season's black, fitness / pj shorts, all black socks and all black shoes).

Report Time For All: 6:30pm - Show up already in your nice outfit. :)

Uniforms:

Students - please make sure you remove everything from your uniforms (i.e. cell phones, wallets, money, keys, etc.) before you hand them in. This will help with the turn in and will make everyone's hand-in smoother. If you do forget an item, please don't cut in line and return to the back of the line. Thanks!

Here is a video to show you how to put your uniform back on it's hanger (which if done correctly, will help reduce the time handing the uniforms in):

Uniform Video

Adopt-A-Raincoat:

Due to the size of our Marching Band, we are in need of more raincoats to have enough coats for all the band members and to fill in the gaps in the available sizes.

We are having doing a "Adopt-A-Raincoat" program where anyone can donate $30 and hand in the certificate with the donation - in which we will hang up the certificate in the band room for all to see. To clarify, the sponsorship is a general sponsorship - and not for a specific raincoat.

For more info and the form - refer to this link: Adopt-A-Raincoat

Senior Show Drillbook Next App Info:
For those who have the app for marching band, this info was shared on the Facebook Page when Karn Evil 9 was introduced and last night. Only KE9 and Time Warp are uploaded atm (I Don't Care just got delivered today and I was just sent it - it will be done and available before next Monday's practice.)

Show: Senior Show - 15
Password: SeniorPower16

Search for "Jade" - it will come up under that (so you don't have to search thru 30+ HHS on the small screen).

Lots of stuff to write down! I will be back in town all week of the Fall Concert // Senior Show. ^.^ Can't wait to see everyone again!

Homecoming Tailgate

Homecoming is upon us! This year's homecoming is October 2nd! Here is some info about the day.

Homecoming Day Timeline (AKA - The Day Marching Band Students Don't Go Home):

7th hr: Pep Rally in the Gymnasium

2:30pm: Dress Rehearsal with the Homecoming Court at the Football Stadium

3:30pm: Get into uniforms

4pm: Get on the bus for the Homecoming Parade

5pm: Homecoming Parade (Starts at Family Video and ends at Church in downtown)

5:30pm: Tailgate - We are in need of donations. If not donating, please bring $3 per person to help pay for costs. Tailgate Donation Link: Link

6:25pm: March to Stadium / PreGame

~9:30 / 10pm: March back / dismissed. (Time depends on weather, injuries, time outs, overtime, etc.and because it's Homecoming)

As always - the uniform is this season's marching band shirt (or post seasons shirts will work), all black socks and all black shoes. Anything worn under the band uniform must not be seen or alter the form of the uniform (i.e. really baggy pants that make your marching pants look stuffed / falls out on the bottom of the your pants legs. Students typically wear work out or PJ shorts under their uniform - if colder outside, leggings, thin pants, or thermal underwear are fine.

Band Program / Band Booster E-Mail Group:

When we email the group its a challenge to make sure we don't include folks that have moved on, and new folks that have just joined us. So we've moving to a mailing list using Google Groups. To be added to the list, visit here. Select the “Apply for Membership” link.

IMPORTANT - Be sure to select an email delivery preference. The default is “don’t send me updates,” so if you actually want to see emails, you’ll need to select another preference.

Once subscribed you need only howellbandboosters@googlegroups.com to reach the current membership.
You can unsubscribe at any time — each email the system sends has an unsubscribe option.

No Pep Band this Friday!

This Friday's Away game is Grand Blanc. It is a far drive and Smigell has decided to not have a Pep Band. Have an awesome night off - everyone deserves it!

Adopt-A-Raincoat:

Due to the size of our Marching Band, we are in need of more raincoats to have enough coats for all the band members and to fill in the gaps in the available sizes.

It was nice seeing everyone and being able to see the last performance of this season's main show in person. I shall return for the whole Senior Week.  Until then, Stay Awesome!

Friday Home Game - September 18th - 8th Grader Night // School Year Tentative Calendar

Here is the Full Band Program Event Calendar:

* Please mark your own calendar. Take note of the very important events (i.e. Home Football Games, Concerts, Parades, and Festival).

For now and forever, Monday Night Practices are 6pm - 8:30pm instead 6:30pm - 9pm (we only went that long if we were behind).

This Friday's September 18th Home Game Facts*:

We are hosting the district's 8th graders this game. YES to 8th Graders! (They ARE marching!)

Tonight's weather calls for rain / storms — be prepared to get wet .  If it rains,  we march in ponchos.  If it storms,  expect delays like the first home game. Keep an eye on Facebook and the blog for updates.  Everything but the kickoff will go as scheduled if it is storming.

Report Time: 4:30pm @ HHS Football Stadium
Tail Gate: 5:30pm - We are still in need of donations, especially since we are feeding the 8th graders and their family. Donation Sign-Up Link: Sign-Up Page // Mirror Link  // Mirror Link 2 If you are not donating, we ask for $3 per person to help pay for the costs of the tailgate. Thank you!
Dress in Uniform: ~6pm / As soon as the student is done eating
Parade to the Stadium: ~6:15pm / 6:20pm
Pre-Game: ~6:45pm
Post-Game / March Back: ~9pm (Depends on weather, injuries, time outs, overtime, etc. )

* - As weather permits (the first game was a perfect example about how Michigan weather can change and forces us to make changes of plans on the fly. (Follow the Blog and/or Facebook Pages for any updates due to weather.))

As always - the uniform is all black socks and shoes. Anything worn under the band uniform must not be seen or alter the form of the uniform (i.e. really baggy pants that make your marching pants look stuffed / falls out on the bottom of your pant legs or a turtleneck (or w/e shirt) that can be seen from the top of your uniform or the end of the sleeves. Students typically wear the current (or past) season's band shirt and (work out / PJ) shorts under their uniform.

Band Fundraisers

In addition to the shirt orders, 2 posts below, Spirit of Livingston is supporting our band by giving a portion of proceeds from Howell Band apparel back to us.  Please check out their website to see what you could purchase.

The student fundraiser that is going on now is Gourmet Cookie Favorites and Poppin Popcorn all from Custom Resources.  The student fundraiser helps your student earn money towards their student account.  The funds are good for music lessons, instrument repair and upkeep, and the New York trip in April.  Please make these checks payable to Howell Band Boosters.

Both fundraisers end September 15.  Custom Resources is to be placed in the band mailbox with payment on that day.  We will keep you posted on the delivery date.

Booster Meeting

Senior Show Songs (For Seniors Only)

This post refers to the students who are Seniors - Please disregard this post if you are not a Senior.

We are changing the way we are doing the picking of the Senior Show music starting this year. In the previous years, there has been issues selecting songs - therefor we are changing how we are doing it.

There is a playlist of songs that have been either a) Requested (over the summer or at band camp) or b) Pre-selected to go with the Requested songs. Please take a listen to the songs and then pick your top 3 you want to do.

If you have a suggestion - and you have found the arrangement from one of the sheet music companies: 1 2 3 - Suggestions have to have an arrangement already for that song.

Suggestions deadline is tomorrow - September 9th. Please refer to Mr. Smigell for any suggestions - and it will be added to the survey.

Please enter your name at the bottom of the survey - to help us reach the Seniors who haven't completed the survey to those who have. (Your answers will be confidential)

Here is the survey link (the playlist is listed in the survey): Senior Show Survey

You have until this Friday, September 11th to complete the survey. This gives us time to order the music and get the drill written for the Senior Show.

If you have any questions or concerns, please refer to Mr. Smigell.

P.S.

To Everyone else, refer to the Shirt Order Post below. Due date is Monday, September 14th.

Second (And Last) Band Shirt Printing

There has been interest in a followup print run of both the parent/booster shirts as well as this years 2015-16 marching band theme shirt, so we’re putting together a re-order.

The parent shirts are not specific to year, of course, and will serve you well for many years of band fun. The “Highlander—There Can Be Only One” shirt was originally ordered for parents, but lots of kids have expressed interest.

We cannot accept cash—its too difficult to deal with—checks only please. And while checks are to be mailed to Dean Norton for collection (see instructions on the order), the must be made out to "Howell Band Boosters".

We’ll leave the form open for a week and order on Monday, Sept 14.

Here’s the link:

Shirt Order Form

Have an awesome holiday weekend and good luck with your first week of school! <3

Students in need of Host Families

The HHS has 10 students from the foreign exchange program that are need of a host family. If anyone is interested they should contact the counseling office.

Smigell was told to pass this along to see if there are any families in the program that are interested in hosting since we have had a couple band students each school year from this program. It is an awesome experience for both the foreign exchange student and the hosting family. ^.^

Please refer to the last few blog posts that have been made about the first home game. Thank you to all the people who have signed up to donate food/items for the pizza tailgate - you guys helping out and supporting the tailgate become a success! Remember to bring $3 per person if you haven't pre-paid.

We know it is hot and the students will be outside - but it is important for the students to follow the Howell District's dress code (Pg. 15 -16). Please make sure there are no short booty shorts or miniskirts and no revealing tops.
